This is how South Africa lost Lucky Dube and AKA through gun attacks

Lucky Dube died on 18 October 2007 at the age of 43. He never died in a car accident. Lucky Dube was murdered.

According to South African police, Dube was killed in Rosettenville, a suburb of Johannesburg moments after he dropped two of his children at their uncle’s house. On his way from dropping his children off, he was attacked by carjackers who were apparently after the Chrysler 300c he was driving.

Police reports said Dube was shot dead by the carjackers when they attempted to seize his car. The carjackers later said they didn’t recognize Dube as the famous musician when they attacked and killed him.

Five of the men involved in his murder were later arrested by police, and on 31 March 2009, three of his murderers were found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Lucky Dube left behind seven children. He was considered one of South Africa’s greatest musicians of all time.

Until his tragic death in October 2007, Dube refrained from smoking and consuming alcohol because he knew so many people looked up to him – including his own children and therefore wanted to set a good example to all these people. Many found it hard to believe that despite being a reggae musician and a Rastafarian, Dube didn’t smoke.

How AKA also shot dead in Durban

Rapper AKA was shot and killed outside of a restaurant in the city of Durban, South Africa, on Friday. He was 35.

The parents of the South African performer, whose legal name is Kiernan Forbes, confirmed the passing of their son on Saturday in an emotional statement via social media.

“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from Durban police,” Tony and Lynn Forbes wrote in the statement shared on AKA’s official Twitter account.

“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo,” his parents added. “To many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova, and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and gave love in return.”

Police say that AKA, who was scheduled to perform at a nightclub on Friday, had been walking to his car in a popular nightlife area of the coastal city shortly after 10 p.m. when two armed individuals fired several gunshots at close range before fleeing, The New York Times reports. A second man died at the scene, believed to be AKA’s friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, a chef and entrepreneur.

According to the Times, authorities were still searching for the suspects at press time.

Hours before his death on Friday, AKA shared a post on Instagram promoting his upcoming album, Mass Country, which is scheduled for release later this month. Following news of his death, the post was flooded with comments from music stars like Diplo and Swizz Beatz. “Damn bro,” Diplo wrote. Swizz added numerous crying face emojis.

One of South Africa’s leading hip-hop artists, AKA had worked as a producer for numerous artists before releasing his 2010 debut album, Altar Ego, which featured the popular track “Victory Lap.” He later becomes known for songs like “All Eyes on Me,” “Fela in Versace” and “Lemons (Lemonade).”

In 2019, he was the subject of a Comedy Central Roast special that aired on Comedy Central Africa.
